Campaign against Permatemps and Hewlett Packard
Posted on: 22nd April 2007
One of the biggest impediments to organizing is the permatemp phenomenon. In Poland, the amount of people who are forced to either set up their own company to be hired or who work through agencies or intermediary firms is extraodinarily high. Private employees feel entitled to do so because the leading pundits of economic opinion have built a consensus that the main cause of unemployment in Poland is the high cost of unemployment, meaning the cost of social benefits.

Poland: Anti-fascist action in Krakow

On April 14, fascists from the group ONR decided to hold a march in Krakow. It was the 73rd anniversary of its founding, but also it was the time when Jewish and Israeli youth come to Krakow each year for the March of the Living, a kind of tribute to Holocaust victims. So really bad taste - and of course the march was accompanied by different antisemitic slogans, etc. etc.

Estonian trip report and George W. Bush visiting Estonia
Posted on: 18th December 2006
I was in Tallinn and Narva 29.-30. September checking the scene and it looked really good! 29th of September there was a movie screening of "Surplus" and "Colours of Resistance" (latter about year 2000 protests in Prague) with Estonian subtitres, and 80 people (!) came to the screening.. there is both Estonian and Russian speaking anarchist scene in Tallinn, in movie screening both of these were around but in general there is a serious language problem as people do not really have a common language as many speak only one language. Punamust.org is practically only Estonian language project, recently a Russian section of the site was opened but it was a huge work as nobody spoke language very well. Some Russian speakers had plans to publish a bilangual zine.

Sergey Sergeyevich Naugolniy escaped from colony FGU IK-13 in Sverdlovsk region (capital of which is Yekaterinburg) 22th of June. We would perhaps never know about escape of Sergey Naugolniy, if he was not doing time in the same colony as famous political prisoner Mikhail Trepashkin, railroaded to prison due to his role in investigating the appartment explosions in Moscow in 1999 which served as a justification for launching second war in Chechnya which goes on still, almost 7 years later (see information about Trepashkin case in end of this letter). Sergey Naugolniy has been fighting back in the colony IK-13 together with Trepashkin, and although he had only 8 months left of his sentence, after hearing rumours that his sentence might be prolongued and he might be moved to other colony, perhaps to a silent death due to medical neglect, he decided that he had nothing to loose.

Prospective of the Workers' Movement and Anarcho-Syndicalism in Poland
Posted on: 3rd December 2004
In Poland we have two phenomena occuring simultaneously; on the one hand, trade union membership has reached a low. Unions tend to be concentrated in large industries, often from the budget sector, sometimes privatized companies. (There are exceptions, but it is not a significant portion of the private workplaces.) On the other hand, the situation is so bad for most people that strike and worker activity is on the increase. While this is happening the, the great majority of workers find themselves not protected by unions. A growing portion of workers find themselves in temporary or contractual relations that preclude protection by the labour code. This segment of workers, most of which have never been organized is something of a black hole.

We are promised "elections" of governors of republics from among candidates chosen by president only, army of ministry of internal affairs taking constant control over the regions, Duma to be formed only from candidates of marionette parties, and a new wave of state political terror under banner of "fight against extremism". This is the biggest maneuver of rulers of Russia to consolidate their power during the last 11 years. And still we may hardly be surprised - there is little doubt that security services are up for a total control over the society. Goal of such a control is not security of the people, but absolute power of the state.

Aleksei's notes about "gopniks" and "non-formal" subcultures in ex-USSR
Posted on: 15th July 2004
Best description on what is a gopnik is in Muri’s colon in May’s issue Of ABfB. Whether you may define that just as hooliganism, that depends a bit on the context and region. Most likely term "gopnik" comes from slang word "gop stop", which dates back to tsar's time and means street robbery. Whereas in big cities of Western Russia it is enough to have short hair, jogging suit and violent attitude to be a gopnik, here in Ural there were lots of prison camps and whole culture is saturated by prison ways, so you must be more close to original “gop stop” concept, a tru gangsta to qualify, since at least 2/3 of the young men look like gopniks.

xUSSR: Avtonom #22 English summary
Posted on: 2nd June 2004
Dear friends, welcome to another international mailout of Avtonom. As you see, repression in Krasnodar and consecutive transfer of editorial collective to Moscow has deformed our journal from its former riotous self to a boring 44 page academic opus with a glossy cover and 3 page articles. This might have been the KGB intention in the first place. Moscow intellectuals are up for no good. This may be end of Avtonom, but samizdat is still alive and kicking, just read Luchi from Tyumen or Skunx Times from Kirov to get convinced...

THE ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIC FORUM
Posted on: 20th May 2004
In terms of the Forum, it is hard to say how many people came because, typically nobody stayed for everything but people came for one or two things they were interested in. The space usually had from a low of 200 people to up to 400 people, so we estimate (although we weren't really counting) that between 800-1000 different people showed up in total.

Lyosha Cherepanov, one of the most active militants of Autonomous Action of Krasnodar got drugs planted on him on Wednesday. Lyosha does not use drugs, not even grass which freely flourishes in every other yard of Kuban. He is freed from army for health reasons, but got a letter from draft commission to come to "re-register" in Wednesday. In middle of the road, he was arrested by police. He was allowed to make few phonecalls, so he was able to inform that he was planted drugs and sentenced to "9 days of administrative arrest" for "a refusal to follow orders of Gosnarkokontrol", which is a new ATF-analogue in Russia.
